Reintroducing
rescued fauna
- Scientific
based reintroduction
- Reintroduction
x Release
Sadly enough
there have been very little efforts in Brazil to rehabilitate and release
wildlife rescued from traffic back into their original habitats.
SOS FAUNA
envisions a wildlife rescue, rehabilitation and reintroduction
program operating through Wildlife Holding Facilities strategically
located on traffic hotspots in the Northeastern, Northern and Central-Western
regions of Brazil.
REHABILITATION
AND REINTRODUCTION
Here
all work and efforts must concentrate on letting animals rescued from
traffic survive and recover. Therefore rehabilitation must follow
veterinary and biological criteria.
Reintroduction
should be a goal within the shortest time possible, and animals must
be constantly monitored as for their real conditions to be released
back into the wild.
However,
reintroduction can not be compared to sole releases. Open cages and
let animals lose in nature might be a beautiful thought, but if not
based on viability studies for reintroduction, release
can be the worst solution possible.
Reintroduction
studies must involve
collecting data on a variety of relevant aspects, such as population
size and ranges, conditions for reproduction, competition with other
species, predators, anthrop interference, natural food and water supplies,
and natural shelters, among others.
Finally,
post-release monitoring is essential for a successful
reintroduction of wildlife.
